Recent internal data lists over $542 million in land, homesites and other rural acreage for sale in the Free State. This represents more than 18,000 acres of Maryland land for sale. Of Maryland's 24 counties, Charles County had the most land and acreage for sale. The most expensive piece of land listed for sale in Maryland on Lands of America recently was $15 million, while the average price of land and other rural acreage for sale in Maryland was $718,537. There were 34 acres of sold land in Maryland recorded in October 2018 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a decrease in sales activity over August 2018 data. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $1 million. Charles County recorded the most land sales recently in the state. Maryland is home to 61 wildlife management areas covering over 123,000 acres, where hunters can take aim for black bear, coyote, white-tailed deer, mink, rabbits, and more. In addition, a number of state parks, forests, and other state-run land areas offer various hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreational opportunities. As befits a state with excellent hunting for game including geese, dove, turkey, and whitetail deer, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Maryland. Maryland is one of the country's smallest states in terms of size, covering an area of 12,407 square miles (8 million acres). In its entirety, 9,707 square miles (78 percent) is land, while the remaining 2,699 square miles is made up of water.
